What to look for in a hybrid training app
If you lift and run, or lift, run and swim, most apps only see part of your week. Here is what a hybrid training app needs to do, and a checklist to test any app against.
What a hybrid training app is
A hybrid training app logs strength and endurance work in one place. That matters because the two affect each other: a heavy leg day changes tomorrow's run, and a long run changes how the next squat session feels. An app that only sees one of them can't show you that.
The checklist
Whichever app you pick, check it can do these seven things.
- Log lifting properly. Sets, reps and weight for each exercise, not just "strength, 45 minutes". Personal records tracked for you.
- Track runs with GPS. Distance, pace, route and km splits, with a treadmill option for indoor runs.
- Handle a third discipline. Swimming, classes or a sport. Hybrid weeks are rarely just two things.
- Show the whole week on one screen. Every session in one timeline, so you can see when hard days are stacking up.
- Sync with your watch. Sessions from Apple Watch, Garmin or WHOOP should appear without typing them in again.
- Cover food. Training twice as many ways needs fuelling. Calories and protein in the same app keeps it simple.
- Be quick. If logging a session takes longer than a minute, you'll stop doing it by week three.
Where single-sport apps fall short
| Type of app | Good at | What it misses for hybrid training |
|---|---|---|
| Lifting logs | Sets, reps, weight, PRs | No GPS runs, so half your week is missing |
| Running apps | GPS, pace, routes, splits | Strength is usually one timed entry with no sets or weights |
| Watch apps | Recording heart rate and duration | Rarely show what you lifted, and each brand keeps to its own devices |
| Hybrid training logs | Everything in one timeline | Newer, so fewer niche features for any single sport |
None of these is wrong. If you only run, use a running app. The gap shows up when you train across disciplines and want one honest picture of the week.
How Strand measures up
Strand is a hybrid training log built by a small UK team for people who lift, run and swim. Against the checklist:
| Need | In Strand |
|---|---|
| Gym | Sets, reps and weight, 180+ exercises, volume totals and personal records |
| Run | GPS runs with route map, km splits, pace and audio cues, plus treadmill mode |
| Swim | Laps, pool length and stroke |
| Week | One home screen with every session across every discipline |
| Watch | Apple Health and Health Connect import from Apple Watch, Garmin, WHOOP and more |
| Food | Barcode scanner, calorie counter and macro tracker |
What Strand doesn't do yet: cycling. It's on the list of things athletes have asked for.
Training for Hyrox? The race is eight 1 km runs with a workout station after each one, so your log needs both sides. Our Hyrox training guide covers the race format and a 12-week structure.
Common questions
What is a hybrid training app?
A hybrid training app logs more than one kind of training in the same place, usually strength work and endurance work. Instead of a lifting app, a running app and a notes page, you get one log that shows your whole week.
What strength tracking apps are built for hybrid athletes who balance heavy lifting with Hyrox-style conditioning?
Look for an app that logs sets, reps and weight properly and also tracks runs with GPS, so lifting and conditioning sit in one log. Strand is built for exactly this: a gym log with 180+ exercises and personal records, a GPS run tracker with splits, swim logging and nutrition, free on iPhone and Android.
Can I use Strand for Hyrox training?
Yes. You can log the strength sessions, the runs and the mixed conditioning sessions in one place and see the whole week together. Strand is not affiliated with Hyrox.
Does a hybrid training app replace my watch?
No. A watch records the session; the app is where the whole week lives. Strand imports runs, swims and strength workouts from Apple Watch, Garmin, WHOOP and other devices through Apple Health on iPhone and Health Connect on Android.
Is Strand free?
Strand is free to download, and logging gym sessions, runs and swims is free. Optional Plus and Pro plans add extras such as full nutrition tracking, the social feed, leaderboards and advanced insights.
